Thyroid Deficiency and New Scientific Findings
A new anyalysis of data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control indicates that a toxic chemical in rocket fuel has severely contaminated the nation's food and water supply. Scientists warn that the chemical, known as perchlorate, could cause thyroid deficiency in more than 2.2 million women of childbearing age. The EPA has identified perchlorate contamination in the ground water of 35 states, with the Colorado River being among the hardest hit. Due to the large number of crops irrigated with water from the Colorado River, high concentrations of perchlorate can be found in the vegetables produced in that area. An FDA study found perchlorate in 93% of the nation's milk and lettuce. A new Environmental Working Group analysis of Centers for Disease Control data shows 2.2 million women are at risk of thyroid deficiences from high levels of perchlorate pollution.
