Drugs, Bones, and Fractures
According to an Associated Press Article found in JAMA, it was stated that popular heartburn drugs such as Nexium, Prevacid, and/or Prilosec can cause bone weakness and fractures when taken over a year's time. The study raises many questions because millions of people take these drugs.
Researchers speculate that when these drugs reduce acid in the stomach, it makes it harder for the body to absorb calcium which is a building foundation for healthy bone and joints.
Researchers express concern for many of the elderly who take these drugs. The susceptibility of fracture is even more of a probability when these drugs are added to their systems.
Another part of the JAMA article gives more information as to the possible side effects that 'over the counter antacids' can have on people. Some of the OTC antacids mentioned are Tums, Rolaids and Maalox. People with chronic heartburn can develop painful ulcers in the esophagus, and in rare cases, some can end up with damage that can lead to esophageal cancer when taking these OTC drugs for a long period of time.
The classification of Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec drugs are known as proton pump inhibitors. The study found a similar but smaller risk of hip fractures for another class of acid-fighting drugs called H2 blockers. Those drugs include Tagamet and Pepcid.
The press release also discussed how heartburn medicines are heavily advertised in "Ask your doctor about ..." commercials in this country, particularly during the evening news. Thus, Nexium is the third biggest selling drug in the world (behind the cholesterol medicine Lipitor and blood thinner Plavix), with global sales totaling $5.7 billion last year, according to IMS Health, which tracks drug sales.
The question is 'Do you really know what your drugs you are taking are doing to your body?'
This is why authentic health means you, yourself, have to be fully educated and responsible for what you put into your body (even if the doctor says you should take it). Question all, do your own research, know what you put in your body.........you are in charge of your health; no one else is.
