Antidepressants More Dangerous for Young

The risk of potentially deadly side effects from antidepressant use appears to vary by age, according to a government study. The Food and Drug Administration released the study's findings during a recent advisory panel meeting, where some officials called for more strict warnings on drugs such as Prozac and Zoloft. While adults over the age of 25 appear to experience a reduction in suicidal thoughts and behavior as a result of antidepressant use, the opposite effect has been observed in those younger than 25. Adolescents were found to be at a particularly high risk of suicidal thoughts.

What This Means for You
For young people struggling with depression, it's the most tragic kind of catch-22: Take the prescription and accept the risk, or gamble on avoiding treatment? The same solution won't be right for everyone. Consult your mental health professional.
